opinions on Taurus wanted
ok have been offered the opportunity to purchase 1 or both of the following I've never owned or shot a Taurus before so would like opinions on the arms them self , the price and cal. choice . I do not have anything else in .45 but do in .9mm so already have a "few" rounds in that cal. I've read many reviews on both but its going about 50/50 good vs bad alot of posts about FTF in both cal. in this model. Any first hand info appreciated. Both are like new .
Taurus PT 111 9MM Millennium pro with Extra mag. hard case and key for locking.. $325.00 Taurus PT 145 .45ACP Millennium pro with hard case and key for locking. $350.00 Single mag.Stainless. Thanks |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
My opinion on Taurus is that they are generally overpriced and under featured for what you spend to get one. Build and design leave lots to be desired and again, the same money can find you better. They do work and generally work well. I've fired several autoloading 45's, a 9mm and a couple 357 revolvers. They seem to be rather bulky across the board. I really despise their stupid keyed trigger locking BS, personally.
so in short, while I can't say anything real bad about them I can't find anything nice to say about them either. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
Thanks , not what I wanted to hear but what I wanted to hear , true first hand knowledge of them .
Moving on to better choices. Thanks Tim |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I have been in gun store and I heard a shopkeeper say on more than one occasion : I would take a used Smith and Wesson over a new Tarus.
Dam thats cold. T |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
Taurus revolvers, yes.
Taurus pistols, no, never again. I own both |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
You are right Ag_man...I have a Taurus 606 Pre Lock .357 Magnum and it is a fine shooter w/ an excellent trigger...Autoloaders are a whole different story. Stay away from em'...VD51

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
Go with the PT24/7 Pro
I havent had a lick of problems with mine and I carry it daily. So far I have about 1000 rounds thru it with no fail to feeds and only 2 duds that were problems with the ammo. Also the trigger action has improved with its use. Their quality has really improved over the past few years. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I have a small taurus 45 auto. When I was shooting it in 35 degree weather two pieces broke off of the plastic that hold the rails in back (don't know proper name), the plastic/metal interface. One hit me in the face.
I gave a different taurus 45 auto to a friend and it broke on him. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
The Taurus 800 series is awesome. I would also check out the 24/7 OSS

I am not a fan of double staked mags. I'm the old fashion 1911 .45 ACP type. Prefer Kimbers, though a lot of people don't like them. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I like them, but they do have some quality control issues and its hit or miss if you get a good one.
For the same price(or a touch more) Id suggest looking into Bersa. I have a Bersa Thunder .45 Ultra Compact as my carry piece and LOVE IT! They make the same model in 9mm as well and have a full size .40 if thats what you're into. Or a CZ |

I had a Taurus PT-58 in .380. Beautiful looking gun, fit nicely in hand, held a lot of rounds for as compact as it was. The downside was the trigger pull was longer than a football field. You had to squeeze that trigger all the way back, and then squeeze a little more and maybe it'd fire. I enjoyed the day I sold that thing. |

This information concerning titanium sticking to brass will be filed in the back of my mind. this could be very important in a lot of cases. |

I would like the Bersa .45 ACP, or the extended .40 S&W (13+1), but one gun at a time, unfortunately! We'll see I like the 9mm. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I have 2 Taurus revolvers, one a Ti in .38 Special that is just as light, small and compact as you could possibly want. It's ported and shoots like a dream even with +P. Never had the problem with brass cases mentioned above and have a couple thousand rounds through it. The other is a .41 Mag, also ported. I've got maybe 400-500 rounds through this one with no problems. I don't recommend this powerful a round unless you're fairly experienced. The porting deal very well with muzzle flip but it comes back pretty hard; .41s are pushing 44 Mag power factor.
My experience, buy the revolvers with no problems. I have no experience with the autos. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I have a M85 in Stainless, and the finish is super smooth. Almost like a melted finish. It is polished so well it looks like nickle. This is a double action only gun and the trigger is very light and smooth. Actually, since my Colt Python, this is only the second revolver I have owned that I enjoy the double action.
I too don't care for the lock, but you don't have to use it either. |

Check out www.bersatalk.com They have a bunch of info on good places on line to order from etc. Gander takes FFL delievers, I believe, but if the can get the .380 from eagle imports, they shouldnt have an issue with a 9mm, .40 or the .45, youll just have to wait for it to be shipped. Bersa's are drying up as they are starting to really catch on and their prices have risen as high as other gun prices recently. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
My son-in-law just got a 24/7 Pro and it seems like a nice gun.
Shoots ok, but I'm not an expert. Taurus claims it is the only pistol that gives you a 2nd chance to fire a FTF round. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
Taurus 9mm OSS
have 7200 rounds in it not one misfire ( keep a ledger of how many rounds in everyone of my guns- I know I need a life) |

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
One thing about Taurus is that there are a lot of opinions. Here's one more:
I have a model 94 .22 revolver. I love the feel of it, the sights, the trigger and the price. Unfortunately I've had a few problems. The machining on the gears of the cylinder were choppy to the point of needing to be replaced for fear of it not aligning properly. I sent it back to Taurus for repair and got it back in 9 weeks. Yup, 9 weeks and I hadn't even fired it yet. So I bring it to the range for the first time and encounter a new problem. When firing as a double action (pull the trigger, it cocks, then fires) it doesn't strike true and I end up with unspent cartridges in the cylinder. At first I thought I had a bullet quality issue. However, using it single action (manually cock then fire) it fires every time. I did a lot of testing to be sure it was a double action issue and it has now been confirmed. If this were a larger caliber I would have not reloaded it at all. Needless to say it's back in the box and heading to the manufacturer again. The reason I purchased this firearm was to be used as a "safe" trainer for my wife and then my daughter. I certainly hope I'll eventually be able to do that. Would I buy it again? Not even with the incredible discounts I received (more than half off). But I guess you get what you pay for. I really like the revolver and honestly hope it was a fluke but I think not. |
Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
I own a Taurus Tracker revolver, 45acp using moon clips, 6.5" barrel. It's by far the most accurate handgun I own and I can load a moon clip faster than a speed loader. So far no problems.

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted
Taurus is not an investment type gun.
Not sure whether they function well or not but I do know they go fairly cheap at the gun shows. My 0.02 cents worth. |

All kidding aside I would never buy one of the above mentioned firearms. If I were to find one I would probably hold on to it tho.. |
