opinions on Taurus wanted

ok have been offered the opportunity to purchase 1 or both of the following I've never owned or shot a Taurus before so would like opinions on the arms them self , the price and cal. choice . I do not have anything else in .45 but do in .9mm so already have a "few" rounds in that cal. I've read many reviews on both but its going about 50/50 good vs bad alot of posts about FTF in both cal. in this model. Any first hand info appreciated. Both are like new .

Taurus PT 111 9MM Millennium pro with Extra mag. hard case and key for locking.. $325.00

Taurus PT 145 .45ACP Millennium pro with hard case and key for locking. $350.00 Single mag.Stainless.

Thanks

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted

My opinion on Taurus is that they are generally overpriced and under featured for what you spend to get one. Build and design leave lots to be desired and again, the same money can find you better. They do work and generally work well. I've fired several autoloading 45's, a 9mm and a couple 357 revolvers. They seem to be rather bulky across the board. I really despise their stupid keyed trigger locking BS, personally.

so in short, while I can't say anything real bad about them I can't find anything nice to say about them either.

You are right Ag_man...I have a Taurus 606 Pre Lock .357 Magnum and it is a fine shooter w/ an excellent trigger...Autoloaders are a whole different story. Stay away from em'...VD51

Go with the PT24/7 Pro

I havent had a lick of problems with mine and I carry it daily. So far I have about 1000 rounds thru it with no fail to feeds and only 2 duds that were problems with the ammo. Also the trigger action has improved with its use.

Their quality has really improved over the past few years.

I have a small taurus 45 auto. When I was shooting it in 35 degree weather two pieces broke off of the plastic that hold the rails in back (don't know proper name), the plastic/metal interface. One hit me in the face.

I gave a different taurus 45 auto to a friend and it broke on him.

The Taurus 800 series is awesome. I would also check out the 24/7 OSS

I have one. Haven't shot it much, but it seems OK. Picked it up FTF real cheap..225$

I am not a fan of double staked mags. I'm the old fashion 1911 .45 ACP type.

Prefer Kimbers, though a lot of people don't like them.

I like them, but they do have some quality control issues and its hit or miss if you get a good one.

For the same price(or a touch more) Id suggest looking into Bersa. I have a Bersa Thunder .45 Ultra Compact as my carry piece and LOVE IT! They make the same model in 9mm as well and have a full size .40 if thats what you're into.

Or a CZ

My wife's carry piece is a Bersa Thunder .380 other than the price of ammo - Its an AWESOME little handgun.

Thats how I first got into them, shooting a friends Thunder .380. I agree, an awesome little gun, but I like a bigger bullet ;)

I have a 617 Titanium 357 mag. I ran a few dozen rounds of 38 through it, fun shooting. Went up one day to blast off some 357 rounds. Load gun, hand it to friend, friend starts shooting. After 4 shots he says, "this guns is jammed." What? How does a revolver jam. So he hands it to me and I attempt to fire a round. The trigger is as hard as concrete and will not budge. I drop the cylinder and attempt to eject the rounds. Nothing would come out. The ejection rod was as jammed up as the trigger. After some "light tapping" I get the shells ejected. I go to the shop where I bought it from and told them what happened. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy. Gun gets sent back to Taurus and returns. Didn't seem like anything was done to it. Go to shoot some 357 at the indoor range at the shop, 3 rounds in gun jams. I take the used 617 from the display case, that one did the same thing. Shop owner suggests nickel plated brass cased 357 rounds. Functioned flawlessly. No where does it state in the literature on that gun not to use brass cased ammo! It's a great example as to why it's necessary to get familiar with a gun before depending on it. I couldn't image using it in a self defense situation. Bang, bang, bang, jam.

I had a Taurus PT-58 in .380. Beautiful looking gun, fit nicely in hand, held a lot of rounds for as compact as it was. The downside was the trigger pull was longer than a football field. You had to squeeze that trigger all the way back, and then squeeze a little more and maybe it'd fire. I enjoyed the day I sold that thing.

This information concerning titanium sticking to brass will be filed in the back of my mind. this could be very important in a lot of cases.

My next gun is going to be a Bersa extended 9mm (17+1). It's not that I'm in love with 9mm, but I used to be (all my pistols are 9mm), thus have a ton of 9mm ammo. My problem is that my normal dealer doesn't carry Bersa ( a real gun snob) and the only local dealer is Gander Mt and they don't stock the 9mm, only the .380 Thunder. They said they would order one, prepaid of course.

I would like the Bersa .45 ACP, or the extended .40 S&W (13+1), but one gun at a time, unfortunately! We'll see I like the 9mm.

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted

I have 2 Taurus revolvers, one a Ti in .38 Special that is just as light, small and compact as you could possibly want. It's ported and shoots like a dream even with +P. Never had the problem with brass cases mentioned above and have a couple thousand rounds through it. The other is a .41 Mag, also ported. I've got maybe 400-500 rounds through this one with no problems. I don't recommend this powerful a round unless you're fairly experienced. The porting deal very well with muzzle flip but it comes back pretty hard; .41s are pushing 44 Mag power factor.

My experience, buy the revolvers with no problems. I have no experience with the autos.

I have a M85 in Stainless, and the finish is super smooth. Almost like a melted finish. It is polished so well it looks like nickle. This is a double action only gun and the trigger is very light and smooth. Actually, since my Colt Python, this is only the second revolver I have owned that I enjoy the double action.

I too don't care for the lock, but you don't have to use it either.

yeah, im gonna be getting my wife the 9mm UC 13+1. I love .45 and she shoots it fine, but the 7+1 carry capacity is a bit low.

Check out www.bersatalk.com They have a bunch of info on good places on line to order from etc. Gander takes FFL delievers, I believe, but if the can get the .380 from eagle imports, they shouldnt have an issue with a 9mm, .40 or the .45, youll just have to wait for it to be shipped.

Bersa's are drying up as they are starting to really catch on and their prices have risen as high as other gun prices recently.

My son-in-law just got a 24/7 Pro and it seems like a nice gun.

Shoots ok, but I'm not an expert.

Taurus claims it is the only pistol that gives you a 2nd chance to fire a FTF round.

Re: opinions on Taurus wanted

One thing about Taurus is that there are a lot of opinions. Here's one more:

I have a model 94 .22 revolver. I love the feel of it, the sights, the trigger and the price. Unfortunately I've had a few problems. The machining on the gears of the cylinder were choppy to the point of needing to be replaced for fear of it not aligning properly. I sent it back to Taurus for repair and got it back in 9 weeks. Yup, 9 weeks and I hadn't even fired it yet. So I bring it to the range for the first time and encounter a new problem. When firing as a double action (pull the trigger, it cocks, then fires) it doesn't strike true and I end up with unspent cartridges in the cylinder. At first I thought I had a bullet quality issue. However, using it single action (manually cock then fire) it fires every time. I did a lot of testing to be sure it was a double action issue and it has now been confirmed. If this were a larger caliber I would have not reloaded it at all. Needless to say it's back in the box and heading to the manufacturer again.

The reason I purchased this firearm was to be used as a "safe" trainer for my wife and then my daughter. I certainly hope I'll eventually be able to do that.

Would I buy it again? Not even with the incredible discounts I received (more than half off). But I guess you get what you pay for. I really like the revolver and honestly hope it was a fluke but I think not.

I own a Taurus Tracker revolver, 45acp using moon clips, 6.5" barrel. It's by far the most accurate handgun I own and I can load a moon clip faster than a speed loader. So far no problems.

Taurus is not an investment type gun.

Not sure whether they function well or not but I do know they go fairly cheap at the gun shows.

My 0.02 cents worth.

How could you say that AD?? Don't you know that the prices you see at gun shows are a conspiracy to drive down the prices of Taurus firearms? These things should be high dollar, but these gun show buffoons drive the prices down. It's a shame.. Same thing happened with High-Point... :111:

All kidding aside I would never buy one of the above mentioned firearms. If I were to find one I would probably hold on to it tho..

Taurus autos strike softly (FTF on 3/10 WWB). The trigger pull is long, over travel is harsh, and accuracy is about 2x worse than a Glock or comparable.

My gun shop has previously issued / remanufactured SIGs for $350. Much better choice.

But... I opt for the CZ P-01. But a Glock 19 will get the job done.

I do, in blue. Very satisfied with it. I shoot it more than any other firearm, have put many hundred rounds through it, mostly .38 spcl, but train with enough .357 mag to be comfortable with it. I would like a shorter barrel revolver, a 3" would be perfect, 2" too short for my liking.

Thanks for the info. Looking for something for the wife. She cant rack the slide on my S&W 9mm plus I think the lighter trigger pull on the Taurus 357 will be easier for her to shoot.

I have a related question:

People don't seem to like Taurus, and they don't seem to like the S&W Sigma either. But if you had to choose between them; say a Taurus 24/7 or an S&W Sigma, both in 9mm, which would you choose?

Now here's a tough question! I'd would go with the S&W. Most of the complaints I've read, are based more on fit than on function.

Yeah, same here. I'm thinking of getting a "cheaper" 9mm for casual use, but still want one that will work and hold together. I've heard that about the Sigma. My dealer is selling new ones for $360. Seems pretty high.

What about the Bersa 9mm? I'm strongly considering buying one. 17+1 capacity.
